Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked:

1. How many 999 or 101 calls your force has received in relation to alleged UFO or alien sightings in the following years: 2015, 2016 and 2017.

2. If possible, please break down the figures for each year and provide the locations of where the sightings occurred.

In Response:

We contacted you to obtain further ‘keyword’ searches and also explained that we could provide the number of incidents reportd by ‘999’ and by ‘phone’ and that it would include all types of phone reports and that we could not limit the data to 101 calls.  You responded and said ‘For additional keywords, could your researchers please add 'flying saucer', 'spaceship', 'extraterrestrial' or 'strange lights'.  I would also be happy to receive information about all types of phone reports.’

We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention.

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Corporate Development Department of Northumbria Police. I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Northumbria Police.

I am able to disclose the located information to you as follows.

Data was collated through a search of all incidents where one or more of the keywords provided were found within the first three lines of the incident description ( only the first 3 lines are searchable). These were filtered for those reported via '999' or 'phone'. These results excludes any incidents reported via any other means.

With the above in mind please see the extracted data below.
