Robber who threatened Post Office staff with needle jailed
08 Feb | 14:09

A robber who used a needle to threaten staff at a Post Office in Haltwhistle has been jailed.

Stephen Jarvis, 21, has received a four-and-a-half year prison sentence after the robbery back in September 2018.

Jarvis, who is from Greenholme Road in Haltwhistle, pleaded not guilty to robbery and possession of a bladed article but was convicted of both charges following a trial at Newcastle Crown Court in October.

Jarvis entered the Post Office on Main Street on September 10, and used a syringe needle to threaten staff before taking cash from the till.

This week, February 6, he reappeared at Newcastle Crown Court where a judge handed down the jail sentence.

Detective Constable Stuart Evans, one of the investigating officers, said: “This was a truly shocking robbery and the offender will now have plenty of time to consider the consequences of his actions.

“Incidents like this are fortunately rare but when they do occur they can have a huge impact on victims and the wider community.

“It is important the public knows we are fully committed to pursuing offenders and bringing them to justice.”
