AIM OF POLICY: To outline the objectives of the Metro Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT), for the policing of the Metro system.

BENEFIT OF POLICY: Protection and reassurance for employees and members of the public using the Metro system.

REASON FOR POLICY:  Human Rights Act 1998, Article 2 (Protect life)


DESCRIPTION OF POLICY:

In order to ensure a more effective policing of the Metro System and its environs, the Metro NPT will generally remain on the Metro System. It will only be detailed away from the system in an immediate emergency situation, or on the instruction of the Chief Superintendent, Southern Area Command.

The Metro NPT is deployed and tasked with agreed priorities via a monthly tactical coordinating group (TCG) meeting held with various representatives from Nexus and in line with the Nexus/ Northumbria Police Service Level Agreement. Liaison will be maintained with Area Command NPTs to ensure a coordinated response to policing issues on the Tyne and Wear Metro System. Metro NPT officers will also be available for specialist advice and guidance regarding Metro procedures, CCTV and legislation. 

The Metro NPT has Police Support Unit (PSU) tactical level 2 status and a Taser capability.
