Date Responded 15 September 2020

Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked:

For the year 2019, the total number of arrests to prevent breach of the peace, broken down by gender.

In Response:

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted within of Northumbria Police.  I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Northumbria Police.

I am able to disclose the located information to you as follows with the below noted.

This data relates to all arrests that have been conducted with breach of the peace (BoP) as the reason for arrest.  An individual can be arrested to prevent, or in response to, a BoP.

To establish those arrests that were made to prevent a Breach of the Peace, as per the wording of the request seems to indicate, a review all of BoP incidents would need to be manually reviewed, and this would exceed the 18 hour threshold and therefore would have been refused under Section 12 of the Act due to cost/time limits.  Rather than apply that exemption, as a matter of goodwill, we have provided the numbers of all arrests that have been conducted with BoP as the reason.

Male - 1138

Female - 477
