Date Responded 13 November 2019

Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked:

Please you can provide me with the following:

  1. The number of ATM attacks (i.e. gas attacks, ram raids or any other attempts to break into/steal an ATM) that have been reported in your area since the start of the year
  2. The number of reports of the same thing for the past five years both as a total for the year and for the same period as 1) i.e. from January to 9th October. Please can you provide these separated out by year?
  3. Can you also provide the data broken down by type of attack (gas attack, ram raid etc)?

In Response:

We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention.

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Corporate Development Department of Northumbria Police.  I can confirm that the information you have requested is held, in part, by Northumbria Police.

Please note that for the period requested keyword searches within the MO field for the phrases “ATM”, “cash dispenser “, “Automatic teller machine”,  “bank machine”,  “cash point”,  “cashpoint”,  “speed bank”, "hole in the wall" and "hole-in-the-wall" have been conducted.  We have then also searched the location of the offence for "cash dispenser" and have used further keywords (eg withdraw) and offence codes (action fraud, theft from person) to filter the data.

As a result of our extensive searches we can advise that the totals shown below show no offences for 2018 and 2019.  Before the data was filtered, totals dropped in 2017.  This would indicate that the use of the location 'cash dispenser' ceased being used in 2017.  Therefore we can advise that the below data is likely to be incomplete and unfortunately we can see no other options/avenues available for us to extract the data specified in your request.

If you decide to write an article/use the enclosed data we would expect that you to take into consideration the factors highlighted above so as not to mislead members of the public or official bodies or misrepresent the relevance of the whole or any part of this disclosed material.
