Crime Allegations in Hotels - 247/20

Date Responded 13 February 2020

Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked:

In the calendar years 2017-18 and 2018-19, I wish to know how many crime allegations were recorded in the Northumbria Police area involving premises described as 'hotel' in the following categories:

  • theft
  • burglary
  • violence
  • sexual violence

After we sought clarity as your request was unclear, you defined the time period as 1st January to 31st December, for each of the request years, and Sexual violence means sexual offences.

In Response:

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Corporate Development Department of Northumbria Police.  I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Northumbria Police.

I am able to disclose the located information to you as follows, with the caveats below noted:

  • This data has been produced via a location search for ‘hotels’; this may exclude similar locations such as B&Bs or hostels
  • Crimes that have been noted as non-crime, or statistically continuous, have been removed from this count.

If you decide to write an article/use the enclosed data we would expect that you to take into consideration the factors highlighted above so as not to mislead members of the public or official bodies or misrepresent the relevance of the whole or any part of this disclosed material.
