Crimes non UK nationals - 419/18

Date Responded 15 May 2018

Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked:

1. How many people did you charge with the offence of murder in the 2017 calendar year? How many of these individuals were recorded as not being a UK national? Please provide a table showing the nationality of all those people who were not recorded as being a UK national who were charged with murder in the 2017 calendar year.

2. How many people did you charge with the offence of rape in the 2017 calendar year? How many of these individuals were recorded as not being a UK national? Please provide a table showing the nationality of all those people who were not recorded as being a UK national who were charged with rape in the 2017 calendar year.

Note: Please do not include attempt offences and if you do not hold information on nationality of suspects please state so.

3. For the 2017 calendar years could you state how many people you arrested who were recorded by your force as being (i) Romanian, (ii) Albanian and (iii) Syrian citizens?

4. For the 2017 calendar year please provide me with a table showing the number of (i)Romanian, (ii) Albanian and (iii) Syrian people arrested for each type of offence by your force.

In Response:

We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention.

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Corporate Development Department of Northumbria Police. I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Northumbria Police.

I am able to disclose the located information to you as follows.

Points 1 and 2 data was collated through a search of all disposals in 2017 for the offence of murder or rape. These were filtered for charges (does not include summons and postal requisitions) and the nationality of the offender was established. I have provided a count of the number of people charged (if the person was charged more than once, they would only be counted once).

Point 3 and 4 was collated for  all arrests in 2017 where the nationality of the offender was listed as Albanian, Romanian or Syrian were collated. Q3 provides a count of people arrested, however Q4 is a count of all arrests. This means the same person arrested more than once will be counted more than once. Providing a count of individuals for Q4 would not allow for those who have been arrested more than once but for a different offence.

With the above noted, please see the attached.
