Domestic Violence - 772/21

Date Responded 24 June 2021

Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked:

A breakdown of the figures of the total number of domestic violence reports to your Police Force between 1st April 2020 and 31st March 2021. Please break down the figures into gender of the victim (male and female) as follows:

1. Named suspect identified: Evidential difficulties prevent further action, victim does not support (or has withdrawn from) police action
2. Named suspect identified, victim supports police action but evidential difficulties prevent further action
3. Charge or summons
4. Investigation complete: No suspect identified. Crime investigated as far as reasonably possible - Case closed pending further investigative opportunities becoming available
5. Charge/ Summons for alternative offence
6. Named suspect not identified, the crime is confirmed by the victim either declines or is unable to support further police investigation to identify offender
7. Postal charge
8. Caution adult including conditional caution
9. Other agency takes primacy
10. Community resolution
11. Postal charge with alternative offence
12. Adult caution with alternative offence
13. Sufficient evidence to charge, but police decided not in the public interest to prosecute
14. Suspect identified but prosecution time limit expired - 5 years ago

To confirm I am referring to "crimes" and not "incidents".
Please use the "National Home Office crime outcomes codes" for the response.

In Response:

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Corporate Development Department of Northumbria Police. I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Northumbria Police.

I am able to disclose the located information to you as follows with all the below noted.

Every effort is made to ensure that the figures presented are accurate and complete. However, it is important to note that these data have been extracted from a number of data sources used by forces for police purposes. The detail collected to respond specifically to your request is subject to the inaccuracies inherent in any large scale recording system. As a consequence, care should be taken to ensure data collection processes and their inevitable limitations are taken into account when interpreting those data.

The figures provided therefore are our best interpretation of relevance of data to your request, but you should be aware that the collation of figures for ad hoc requests may have limitations and this should be taken into account when those data are used.

Data has been taken from the central database Crime and Victim tables and relate to Crimes as per the clarification received.

The gender stated is the victim gender. Cases where the gender field has been left blank are not included. A separate count of crimes has been provided; one crime may have multiple or no victims associated, and as such the count of crimes may not equal the count of victims.

With the above noted I respond as below.
