Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked:

1 The number of cases in the last year (working back 12 months from 23/09/18) where the subject has been released "under investigation" in relation to drug offences?

2 The number of cases in the last year (working back 12 months from 23/09/18) where the subject has been released "under investigation" in relation to drug offences for over 6 months without a charging decision?

3 The number of cases in the last year (working back 12 months from 23/09/18) where the subject was released "under investigation" in relation to drug offences that led to a charge?

4 The number of cases in the last year (working back 12 months from 23/09/18) where the subject was released "under investigation" in relation to drug offences that led to no further action?

In Response:

We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention.

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Corporate Development Department of Northumbria Police. I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Northumbria Police.

I am able to disclose the located information to you as follows.

The disposal data is live and constantly updating as investigations progress, it is therefore only correct as of the time the data was extracted.

The data behind this FOI has been collated using monthly snapshots taken at the beginning of each month for the past 12 months (Sep 17 - Aug 18). Each snapshot gives the disposal type at the 1st of the month. Q1 is a count of all those who have been "under investigation," for a drug offence, at the time each snapshot was taken. Any duplicates have been accounted for.

This is  a count of individuals rather than "cases" - there could be more than one individual attached to each crime.

With that noted please see our response which provides the information as outlined above.

  1. 555
  2. 182
  3. 83
  4. 93

If you decide to write an article / use the enclosed data we would expect that you to take into consideration the factors highlighted above so as not to mislead members of the public or official bodies or misrepresent the relevance of the whole or any part of this disclosed material.
