Date Responded 06 April 2020

Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked:

How many reports were there of illegal substances being seized or confiscated from school premises in your area in each of the following calendar years: 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019

In each case of seizure or confiscation, please could you give details of:

  • the type and amount of drug involved, where known
  • the type of school premises involved, for example primary or secondary school
  • details of who it was seized or confiscated from, for example their age, if they are a staff member or pupil

If the request goes beyond the scope of the time limits covered by FOI, please reduce the data by year starting from the oldest – ie please send the most recent data, starting with 2019, then 2018, etc.

In Response:

We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention.

As much of the information you have requested is accessible by other means I have not provided you with a copy of the information and will rely on Section 21 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000.  You should therefore consider this a refusal for your request.

I have provided an explanation to this exemption below.

Section 21 (1) - Information accessible by other means

Information which is reasonably accessible to the applicant is exempt information.

Much of this information has been asked for previously, released and is published on the Northumbria Police Disclosure Log.  A simple search of “drugs in schools” will return numerous response on this subject area (FOI’s 866/19, 1053/19, 116/20, 212/20 and 192/20) and you will be able to extract relevant information.  Please note that these will provide the most up to date available information.

Due to current circumstances effecting us all, this is the most time effective way to be provided with relative information.
