Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked:

  1. How many hate crimes did your police force record, as having been committed against people who identify as transgender?
  2. Of these crimes, how many resulted in a prosecution?
  3. How many hate crimes did your police force record, as having been committed based on sexual orientation?
  4. Of these crimes, how many resulted in a prosecution?

For each question above please respond for the following financial years:

(a) Starting in April 2019 and finishing at the end of March 2020

(b) Starting in April 2020 and finishing at the end of March 2021

In Response:

I am able to disclose the located information to you with the following caveats noted:

  • The data has been taken from the central database using the crime table.  Crimes have been included where there was a flag for either 'homophobic' or 'transphobic' hate crime.  Both flags were included in questions 3 and 4 where we were looking for crimes that were based on sexual orientation.
  • The results in questions 2 and 4 are those where a charge has been laid.
