Date Responded 25 May 2018

Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked:

I'd like to request data on hate crimes in Northumbria, specifically religious or racial hate crimes (we are interested in anti-Muslim incidents). I would like to know the month that the incident took place, crime type, outcome, district, and the victim identity (race, gender, age if possible). The data should begin in January 2015 until April 2018.

In Response:

We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention.

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Corporate Development Department of Northumbria Police. I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Northumbria Police.

The below caveats should be noted when considering the data

Religion data is only available from April 5015, so the date range for this FOI is 01/04/2015 to 31/03/2018, The 'faith hate' flag was used to identify those crimes that should be included in this request.

As you are specifically interested in anti-Muslim incidents only those victims who have Islam as their religion have been included in the results.

This may not be accurate as there are a number of victims whose religion is recorded as unknown.

The Victim data displays differing totals, this is due to the fact that the information requested is not always recorded and this leads to anomalies.  For example, the age of the victim is calculated from the date of birth and the date of the crime.  If the date of birth has not been recorded there will be no age of the victim but there may be an ethnicity etc.

With all the above in mind I am able to disclose the located information to you as attached.
