Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked:

1a. How many offences involving knives or bladed instruments were recorded between 1 January 2017 and 31 March 2017?

1b. How many offences involving knives or bladed instruments were recorded between 1 January 2016 and 31 March 2016?

1c. How many offences involving knives or bladed instruments were recorded between 1 January 2015 and 31 March 2015?

1d. How many offences involving knives or bladed instruments were recorded between 1 January 2014 and 31 March 2014?

 2. Please list the names, gender and ages (if known) of any victims of homicide involving knives or bladed instruments during the above periods.

3. Please state the overall number of victims of crimes involving knives or bladed instruments during those periods, regardless of whether they were injured or not.

4. Please group the victims in question 3 into age ranges (12 and under, 13 to 16, 17 to 19, 20 to 24, 25 to 29, 30 to 34, 35 to 39 and 40 and over) and gender.

In Response:

We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention.

 Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the (Department/s Area Command/s) of Northumbria Police. I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Northumbria Police.

 I am able to disclose the located information to you as follows.

 1, 3 & 4 – See attached

 With regards to point 2 the below exemption is applicable and has been applied in part.

 As the information you have requested is accessible by other means I have not provided you with a copy of the information and will rely on Section 21 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000.  You should therefore consider this a refusal for your request.

 I have provided an explanation to this exemption below.

 Section 21 (1) - Information accessible by other means

Information which is reasonably accessible to the applicant is exempt information.

The murder date, gender and age are  available via different media outlets and is therefore freely available.
