Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

I would like to know please for each of the following years 2015/16; 2016/17 and 2017/18:

1. The number of murders

2. How many of those involved a bladed weapon

3. How many of those involved a firearm

4. The sanction-detection rate

We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention.

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Crime Department of Northumbria Police. I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Northumbria Police.

I am able to disclose the located information to you as follows. 

Financial year 2015-2016

10 Murders

1 involving a firearm

5 involving a knife/bladed article

All 10 resulted in charges for murder.

Financial year 2016-2017

11 Murders

0 involving a firearm

5 involving a knife/bladed article

All 11 resulted in charges for murder.

Financial year 2017-2018

10 Murders

0 involving a firearm

5 involving a knife/bladed article

9 resulted in charges for murder, 1 awaiting charging decision from CPS.
