Date Responded 10 March 2020

Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked:

I would like to know the numbers of reported incidents of postage theft made by the public in your police force.

I would like this data for the last two calendar years – 2018 and 2019.

If possible, could this data be broken down by the postcode area in which it occurred.

In Response:

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Corporate Development Department of Northumbria Police. I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Northumbria Police.

The information provided has been gleaned from searched of the Home Office code 042/00  Stealing mail bags or postal packets or unlawfully taking away or opening mail bags.

It should be noted that this may not be the only way to record such instances, for example 039/00  ‘Stealing from the person of another’ or 049/00  ‘Stealing not classified elsewhere’ could also have been used, however to conduct searches of all 3 Home Office codes would have far exceeded the permitted 18 hour threshold.  We have therefore limited our searches to HO code 042/00 only,  and underline the fact that, for the reason outlined above, that this may not be an accurate reflection of such instances.

It should also be noted that the information has been provided in a way which negates the need for exemptions to be applied to withhold.

Not all crime have postcodes attached to them.

With the above noted, please see the below.

If you decide to write an article / use the enclosed data we would expect that you to take into consideration the factors highlighted above so as not to mislead members of the public or official bodies or misrepresent the relevance of the whole or any part of this disclosed material.
