Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked:

“I am writing to you in regards to the number of rape reports in the Sunderland area. I would like to know

1) How many cases of rape have been reported to you each year in the last 3 tax years, 2015/16, 2016/17 & 2017/18?

2) How many rapes happened in the specific policing areas of Sunderland – ie Sunderland Central etc?

3) How many rapes have been reported in public areas such as parks etc.

4) How many happened in a domestic dwelling?”

In Response:

We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention.

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Corporate Development Department of Northumbria Police. I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Northumbria Police and in addition we have provided some additional context to support your request.

Northumbria Police’s number one priority is to protect those in our communities who are vulnerable, and this clearly includes victims of rape and sexual offences.

We actively encourage victims of these offences to come forward and report such offences in the knowledge that they will be fully supported by specialist teams every step of the way.

There is an increased confidence in the police, that they will take offences of this nature seriously and put offenders before the courts. This is work we are extremely proud of.

Media coverage of high-profile cases – including historic offences – has also led to more victims coming forward.

It is important to recognise the changes that have been made across the country in the way that crime has been recorded. This has resulted in sexual offences being recorded as crimes that may not have been in the past.

With the above in mind, I am able to disclose the located information to you as follows and in the attached document.

Q1 is all rape crimes (including attempted rape) recorded between 01/04/2015 and 31/03/2018.

Q2 is how many of those were recorded in Sunderland Local Authority area (Sunderland Central, Sunderland East ,Sunderland South, Sunderland West, Sunderland North, Washington, Houghton). We have included a list of all location types which we have categorised as "public areas" and all of those we have categorised as "domestic dwellings" at the bottom of the summary sheet. Not all locations fitted these categories and therefore the totals do not match those in Q2. Location types which we have not included are listed below.
