Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')
As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.
You asked:
Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, I am requesting the total number of instances whereby motorists have been caught on public roads (Within Northumbria Police's force coverage area) with red diesel in their fuel tanks.
This information should, if possible, be over a five-year-period and broken down into the areas of which people were caught i.e. Gateshead, Newcastle, Birtley etc.
I am also requesting information on the outcomes of motorists caught, which means, I am wanting to know the number of motorists who have been reported to HMRC.
In Response:
The data has been taken from the incident table in the central database where the keyword 'red diesel' appeared in the first three lines of the incident description.
We are only able to search the first three lines of the incident description. It is possible that one of the keywords may feature later in the incident description but if so, that incident will not be captured in this dataset.
In 8 of the 9 incidents where the word red diesel appears in the incident description, the description goes on to mention that HMRC have or should be informed.
As it is HMRC who deal with this type of offence, it would be reasonable to assume that in all cases of an uplift the matter is referred on.
