Screened Out Crimes 2019 - 2022 - 275/22

Date Responded 10 March 2022

Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked:

I am writing to request information under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 on the amount of “screened out” crimes within 24 hours of being reported for the following calendar years: 2019, 2020, 2021 and to date (1st February 2022)

Please can you provide me for each calendar year:

1. The total number of crimes that have been “screened out” for further investigation or ‘filed’ shortly after it was reported to the police.
These are cases which do not qualify for investigation after an initial screening process. This also includes reported crimes closed within 24 hours, without a police officer being assigned to it. Please break this information down into individual offence as per the Count Offence Classification Index.

2. Please can you provide me with the total number of crimes reported to your force for the calendar years 2019, 2020, 2021 and to date (1st February 2022). Please break this information down into individual offence as per the Count Offence Classification Index.

In Response:

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Corporate Development Department of Northumbria Police. I can confirm that the information you have requested is held, in part, by Northumbria Police.

I am able to disclose the located information to you as follows.

1. No information held as we can only provide the screening status of the crime as of the day the data was extracted. The screening status can change at any point – a crime which was initially screened out may be screened in if and when new information becomes available. We would not know if a crime which is now screened in has previously been screened out. Also, we cannot identify those which have been screened out on the same day as they were reported.

Screened out means no further enquiries/investigation necessary. For example, when an individual is charged then no further enquiries are necessary and therefore the crime would be closed as detected and is screened out. The count of crimes screened out will not necessarily be those that have not gone beyond initial assessment.

This is in line with our responses to similar submissions that can be found on the Northumbria Police disclosure Log, the link to which is provided below.
