Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked:

I would like to know the number of sexual offences reported to have taken place in hospitals, surgeries or medical centres over the past three years please.

1. How many reports of sexual offences were recorded to have taken place in hospitals, surgeries or medical centres over the last year please? (2017, or 2016-17, or however statistics are reported).

2. How many reports of sexual offences were recorded to have taken place in hospitals, surgeries or medical centres in the year 2016 (or 2015-16).

3. How many reports of sexual offences were recorded to have taken place in hospitals, surgeries or medical centres in the year 2015 (or 2014-15).

4. If you are also able to add in a breakdown of the type of sexual offences recorded in hospitals, surgeries or medical centres, that would also be helpful please.

We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention. 

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Corporate Development Department of Northumbria Police. I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Northumbria Police. 

Data was collated through a search of all crimes created between 01/01/2015 and 31/12/2017 which are classified as a 'sexual offence' by the Home Office.  Data has been categorised by PS Group3 offence type and by calendar year.   Crimes included are those where either location field is listed as; Hospital, Clinic, Health Centre, Surgery, Surgery Doctors, Walk In Centre.  Please be advised that there may be a data quality issue and this is down to the correct submission of location by the officer. 

If you decide to write an article / use the enclosed data we would ask you to take into consideration the factors highlighted in this document so as to not mislead members of the public or official bodies or misrepresent the relevance of the whole or any part of this disclosed material.
