Sexual Assaults in Hospitals - 1149/19

Date Responded 17 October 2019

Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked:

  1. Could you please tell me how many sexual assaults were recorded in hospitals in your area in each year since 2014?
  2. Could you also please specify how many in each year were recorded as rape?
  3. If possible, could you also please tell me the types of wards or hospitals in which the assaults took place? Whether for instance they were in psychiatric hospitals, or childrens' hospitals, etc.

In Response:

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Corporate Development Department of Northumbria Police.  I can confirm that the information you have requested is held in part by Northumbria Police.

I am able to disclose the located information to you as follows.

The data provided has been extracted by searches for sexual offences as defined by Home Office classifications recorded between 01/01/2014 and 31/12/2018 where the location field was defined as "hospital" and/or "ward."

To note the crime details do not give the hospital/ward type so we are unable to  offer a response to that part. In order that we may offer a response to the remainder of your request, as you asked at that point  ‘if possible’, we have discounted point 3.
