Social Media Crimes - 279/20

Date Responded 19 February 2020

Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked:

I am requesting the following information for each of the past three years for which records are available:

The total number of reports of crime received by your police force in which any of the following terms are mentioned: "Facebook," "Twitter," "Whatsapp," or "Instagram."

In Response:

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Corporate Development Department of Northumbria Police.  I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Northumbria Police.

I am able to disclose the located information to you as follows, however the following should be noted:

  • "The past three years for which records are available" has been read as "full calendar years."
  • This search only includes the modus operandi (MO) of each crime.  If a term is mentioned elsewhere, it will not appear within this count.  If a term does not exactly match the search, it will not be included within this count.
