Date Responded 12 May 2022

Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked:

In total, how many of the cars reported as stolen in 2021 were located and returned to the owner?

In Response:

We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention.

To note – this request has been aggregated with your previous submission on this subject matter due to time/cost constraints.

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Corporate Development Department of Northumbria Police. I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Northumbria Police.

I am able to disclose the located information to you with the caveats to be noted as follows:

• The following offences were taken into account:
 Unauthorised taking or driving of a motor vehicle (custody code),
 Taking a motor vehicle (local sub-code for TWOC) and
 Theft of motor vehicle.

• The data was then analysed to find those vehicles stolen in 2021 that had a property status of 'recovered'.

• To note – to provide data specifically to answer the wording of your submission would be meaningless. We have therefore provided the number of vehicles actually stolen in 2021 alongside the number recovered.

With the above noted we can advise the results of those searches are as follows.

Number recorded as being stolen under the offences listed above – 1,616

Number recovered - 715
