Theft from vehicle - 315/18

Date Responded 12 April 2018

Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked:

Have there been any thefts of tools from vehicles where there are no signs of forced or violent entry ie keyless entry from/within/ postcode NE34 6TZ and the surrounding area (approx 10 mile radius) between 25/01/18 and 22/03/18 if so please can you advise how many

In Response:

We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention. Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Corporate Development Department of Northumbria Police. I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Northumbria Police.

The total was established through a search of all 'theft from motor vehicle' (TFMV) crimes created between 25/01/2018 and 22/03/2018, where any items stolen were classified as 'tools.'  These were then imported onto a map to establish which crimes occurred within a 10 mile radius of NE34 6TZ. The relevant crimes were then manually reviewed to determine how the theft occurred.  Crimes where the MO mentions forced entry (i.e. damage to the vehicle) have been excluded and those where the vehicle was insecure prior to the theft. Those included are where the method of entry is unknown but there is no sign of damage and the vehicle was  thought to be secure prior to the theft. As the MO has been used to determine these details and the information included in a crime MO is limited, the total provided may over estimate the number of 'keyless  entry' theft of tools from vehicles.

With the above in mind, I am able to disclose the located information to you as follows.

Additionally, if you decide to write an article / use the enclosed data we would expect that you to take into consideration the factors highlighted above so as not to mislead members of the public or official bodies or misrepresent the relevance of the whole or any part of this disclosed material.
