Date Responded 15 June 2021

Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked:

For each of the last two years of data available to you (I gather different organisations record data differently. 19-20 and 20-21 would be sufficient), can you please confirm the number of theft reports of the following items from cars (just cars would be preferable but if you do not hold the data for cars specifically then please send data for 'vehicles' as a whole):

1. Car entertainment systems
2. Car air bags
3. Car wheels
4. Car batteries
5. Catalytic converters
6. Tailgates
7. Car seats
8. Car logo badges
9. Wing Mirrors
10. Head lamps

In Response:

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Corporate Development Department of Northumbria Police. I can confirm that the information you have requested is held in part by Northumbria Police.

I am able to disclose the located information to you with the caveats below noted.

Every effort is made to ensure that the figures presented are accurate and complete. However, it is important to note that these data have been extracted from a number of data sources used by forces for police purposes. The detail collected to respond specifically to your request is subject to the inaccuracies inherent in any large scale recording system. As a consequence, care should be taken to ensure data collection processes and their inevitable limitations are taken into account when interpreting those data.

The figures provided therefore are our best interpretation of relevance of data to your request, but you should be aware that the collation of figures for ad hoc requests may have limitations and this should be taken into account when those data are used.

It should be noted that this response pertains to cars, vans and other similar vehicle, we cannot distinguish between the two without manually checking each crime which would far exceed the permitted time constraint and subsequently be denied under Section 12.

It should be noted that property information is not always necessarily exact and sometimes is not logged within a crime in a fashion that we can query. We have likened the items asked for as accurately as possible, however it may well be that there are results for almost any of these under ‘car parts’ or ‘car accessories’. Noting the entertainment system request specifically, we have not searched in Audio/Visual, and have only included the various entertainment systems under Vehicle/Accessories (car radio, car entertainment system et cetera.) steering wheels are not included under ‘wheels’.

With all the above noted I can respond as follows.
