Under 17 Perpetrators of DV - 1127/20

Date Responded 19 August 2020

Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked:

  1. In the last financial year (19-20) how many cases of domestic violence did you investigate where the victim was an adult and the alleged perpetrator(s) were aged 17 or under?
  2. Please provide an age breakdown of these children who were investigated and a breakdown by gender.
  3. How many children aged 17 or under were:

(i) cautioned and (ii) charged with domestic abuse in the last financial year (19-20)?

Please provide a table showing the numbers charged for each type of specific offence

After we advised that ‘The current force procedure is that DA only relates to offenders who are 16+, meaning that via this definition coupled with the FOI text we would only be able to return data on those aged 16 & 17 .’ You confirmed that you wanted us to progress with that.

In Response:

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Corporate Development Department of Northumbria Police.  I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Northumbria Police.

To note:

  • Domestic violence is defined as the offender being aged 16 or over.  As such, all data within this return refers to cases wherein the offender has been noted as aged 16 or 17.
  • One crime may have multiple offenders or victims (depending on the type of crime.).  As such, the initial answer to Q1 refers to cases wherein at least one victim has been noted as aged 18+, and at least one offender aged 16 or 17.
  • The breakdown in the latter part of Q1 refers purely to offender data.
  • Q2 refers to the prime disposal of each crime.

With the above noted I am able to respond as follows.
