Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked:

Please could you provide the below information for the calendar years of 2018, 2019, 2020 and for the period 01/01/21 to 31/06/21.

 

  1. How many (unique) claims - both compensation claims and complaints - of unlawful arrest or false imprisonment has your police force received over the requested period?   By unique, I mean distinctive claims/complaints (i.e.  please do not count duplicates- such as if one person complains several times).
  2. How many of these claims/complaints were successful (i.e.  upheld)?
  3. How much money did your police force have to pay out to the complainants in total?

1-2.  The following information regarding complaints has been extracted from a ‘live’ database and may be subject to the addition and deletion of complaints, complainants and subjects after the initial extraction of data used for the purposes of this request.  Data has been checked in relation to complaints then filtered on the following allegation descriptions, Power to arrest and detain and unlawful/unnecessary arrest or detention.
