Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked:

  1. The number of full-time and part-time vacancies for constables advertised in this force, organised by month over the last full year to August 2019.  Please could you provide information on both internal and external adverts for constable vacancies?
  2. The number of unfilled full-time and part-time vacancies for constables in this force, organised by month over the last full year to August 2019

If you do not have this information broken down by full or part-time vacancy, please provide a total number for both.

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the HR Department of Northumbria Police. I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Northumbria Police.

I am able to disclose the located information to you as follows.

  1. Internally the force have advertised the below number of full time constable vacancies month on month for the past 12 months. Externally, we advertise to recruit a supply of candidates to join the force as trainee constables. These officers join in cohorts through planned intakes throughout the year to fill vacancies. The below shows the number of officers who joined as new recruits over the past 12 months.

2. As we do not track specific vacancies month on month we are unable to provide a breakdown of constable vacancies. However, as at the 01 August 2018 there was a shortfall of -69.53FTE constables against the authorised structure. This has decreased to -50.05 FTE as at 01 July 2019. Whilst we are showing a vacancy factor there are also a number of constables who are temporary promoted to Sergeant, constables currently on external secondments and career breaks. As these officers are planned to return to a constable role we do not necessarily recruit to fill these vacancies.
