Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked:

  1. For the calendar years of 2010 to 2019: the number of detectives employed by your police force, per calendar year. This should be broken down between Detective Constable, Detective Sergeant, Detective Inspector, Detective Chief Inspector, Detective Superintendent and Detective Chief Superintendent.
  2. For the calendar years of 2010 to 2019: the number of detective teams/ squads in your police force, per calendar year. Your police force may call these Criminal Investigation Departments (CID), in which case please give me the number of these, otherwise I would like numbers on any other team which ultimately deals with serious and complex investigations.

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted within Northumbria Police. I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Northumbria Police.

I am able to disclose the located information to you as follows.

1.

Data is not available for Jan 2010 & 2011 due to the force structure and categorisation of posts at that time.  Posts located in Crime, Intelligence, Professional Standards, Special Branch, Protecting Vulnerable People etc did not identify whether the post holder was a substantive detective or a constable as this was not a requirement at the time.  In addition, electronic records of an officers detective qualification held at that time were not available.

2. Since 2010 there have been the same number of departments within the force that have detectives carrying out complex investigations.

The overall number of those departments is the same – 5
