Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked:

  1. Any policies that you have regarding the prevention of mental health issues amongst operational Police Officers and Staff.
  2. Any policies that you have regarding the process of identifying and managing mental health issues amongst operational Police Officers and Staff.
  3. Do the same mental health policies apply to both operational Police Officers and Staff, or do these differ according to role?
  4. Do you assess the mental health of all new operational Police Officers and Staff recruited to your Police Service, in addition to their physical health and fitness? If so, please could we request copies of any policies relating to this.

In Response:

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the People Services Department of Northumbria Police.  I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Northumbria Police.

I am able to disclose the located information to you as follows.

Medical fitness for Police Officers is assessed in accordance with regulation.10(1) of the Police Regulations 2003 paragraphs d & e which read;

‘(d) must be certified by a registered medical practitioner approved by the local policing body to be in good health, of sound constitution and fitted both physically and mentally to perform the duties on which he will be employed after appointment;

(e) must meet the standard of eyesight determined by the Secretary of State.’

We do not hold such a policy, however please see the attached procedure in relation to Police Staff.
