Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked:

1. How many police officers have been bitten whilst on duty in the last three years, 2015, 2016, 2017?

2. How many police officers have required a hepatitis shot after being bitten on duty?

3. How many police officers have required hospital treatment (eg. stitches) as a result of being bitten whilst on duty?

Please provide the answers to the above questions broken down into each year and into if the police officer was male or female.

Please provide for both human and dog bites, identifying the numbers for human and dog bites  separately.

We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention. 

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with both the HR and Occupational Health Departments of Northumbria Police. I can confirm that the information you have requested is held in part by Northumbria Police.

In relation to the below table, please note that the figures for ‘Injured by an animal – Dog’ includes bites inflicted by Police Dogs as well.  The ‘Physically assaulted by a person’ shows the figures for human bites and the ‘Injured by an animal – Other’ covers any other animal bites such as fleas etc
