Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')
As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.
You asked:
- How many police officers have been injured or killed (where the cause of death is a stabbing) from January 2016 to December 2019.
- How many police officers have been injured or killed (where the cause of death is a gun) from January 2016 to December 2019.
After we sought clarity you confirmed that you meant whilst on duty and where the injury or death was a result of stabbing or a gun.

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Corporate Development Department of Northumbria Police. I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Northumbria Police.
I am able to disclose the located information to you as follows.
In order to provide a response to this submission searches for crimes with an HO code of the below were made:
104/23 - Assault on a constable
104/30 - Assault on a constable
008/73 - Assault or assault by beating on a constable
008/20 - Assault with Injury
In addition to this, crimes were included where the method/means was assault police or there was a flag for assault PC in the crime table in the central database. These crimes were then narrowed down by excluding those that were not marked as a knife or firearm in the weapon used code. The results of these searches are as below:
- There have been ten recorded incidents of assault without injury to a constable where a knife was recorded as the weapon. Nil response for guns.
- None.
