Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked:

I would like to request information about police stations in your force area in use, opened and closed down each calender year.

The date range for my request is from 1 Jan 2005 to the date my request is answered.

If this request is likely to invoke a Section 12 refusal on grounds of excessive cost or time please reduce the date range until the request becomes manageable within the limits of FOIA (say, for example, within 75% of the cost/time limit).

1) Please provide me with the total number of police stations in your force area

a) in use

b) closed down

during each of the following calender years ending:

i) 31 Dec 2005

ii) 31 Dec 2006

iii) 31 Dec 2007

iv) 31 Dec 2008

v) 31 Dec 2009

vi) 31 Dec 2010

vii) 31 Dec 2011

viii) 31 Dec 2012

ix) 31 Dec 2013

x) 31 Dec 2014

xi) as at the date my request is answered 

2) Please provide a full list of every police station in your force area

a) opened

b) closed

during the last 10 calender years since 1 Jan 2005 showing:

i) The calender year it was opened/closed

ii) The postal address of the police station

We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention. 

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Estates Department of Northumbria Police. I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Northumbria Police. 

I am able to disclose the located information to you as follows. 

This information is as of the date your request was received, as you have been advised on previous occasions, we can only provide information as held at the time a response is received. 

Please see below which answers your request accordingly.

Northumbria Police are in the middle of a major rationalisation of the force estate which will  oversee 20 existing stations closed to be replaced with a similar number of smaller Neighbourhood Policing Team basses, most of which are located in premises with partner agencies.  The aim is to make significant revenue savings and to raise capital receipts to offset the budget cuts and to protect front line policing. 

There will be no reduction in front office opening hours. 

With regards to the postal addresses, as this information is accessible by other means I have not provided you with a copy of the information and will rely on Section 21 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000.  You should therefore consider this a refusal for that part of your request. 

I have provided an explanation to this exemption below.

Information which is reasonably accessible to the applicant is exempt information. 

This information is published on the Northumbria Police website in the 'Contact us' section and is therefore freely available.  Information can also be found on the Asset List on the Police and Crime Commissioners website.
