Date Responded 21 February 2018

Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked:

1.Can you tell me please how many Bitcoins your force has seized under the Proceeds of Crime act Since 2010, broken down year by year?

2.Can you also tell me please what has happened to those Bitcoins.

3.If your force sold them, please tell me how much for and when.

4. If your force still holds them, please confirm this.

In Response:

We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention.

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted within Northumbria Police. I can confirm that the information you have requested is not held by Northumbria Police.

Currently there are no powers to seize BITCOIN under the Proceeds of Crime act.  BITCOIN does not currently fall into the definition of cash within POCA.  Therefore, no information is held.
