Dangerous dogs act - 954/18

Date Responded 12 November 2018

Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked:

  1. How many Community Protection Notices has your police force issued to individuals following reports of aggressive dog behaviour in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 respectively?
  2. How many injunctions has your police force issued to individuals following reports of aggressive dog behaviour in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 respectively?
  3. How many dog ownership bans has your police force issued to individuals following reports of aggressive dog behaviour in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 respectively?
  4. How many dogs were seized by your police force in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 respectively?
  5. How many dogs were destroyed after seizure by your police force in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017?

In Response:

We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention.

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Operations Department of Northumbria Police. I can confirm that the information you have requested is held in part by Northumbria Police.

I am able to disclose the located information to you as follows.

  1. This information is not held over previous years.   However we can confirm that from dog related incidents reported to the police in the year of 2017, which have then been recorded on the Dangerous Dogs Database, there have been no CPNs issued.
  2. Information not held. If a case appears before the courts then it is the court’s decision to place control orders on a dog owner.
  3. As a police force, we do not issue bans on individuals. This would be done by the courts when deciding on what control measures to put in place on the dog’s owner.
