Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')
As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.
1. Can you confirm clubs must report actual numbers of supporters through the gate for crowd safety reasons, which may differ from official attendances published in, for example, match reports?
2. Please provide:
a) attendance figures reported to Northumbria Police for all Newcastle United home games in the 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 season.
b) attendance figures reported to Northumbria Police for all Sunderland home games in the 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 season.
The figures should be correct as of 11th April 2018.
We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention.
Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Football Unit of Northumbria Police. I can confirm that the information you have requested is not held by Northumbria Police.
- We can find no documentation that states clubs must report actual numbers of supporters through the gate for crowd safety reasons. All attendances are published by the club publicly. They do not provide Northumbria Police with alternative figures.
- We do not hold ‘actual attendance’ figures. Northumbria Police hold only figures as published by the clubs, and which are freely available by simple research or by contacting the clubs for that information.
Previous similar requests on this subject have been received and responded to recently with the same response as above and those are published on the Northumbria Police Disclosure Log. FOIs 092/18 and 309/18 refer.
