Grass Cutting - 1621/21

Date Responded 10 December 2021

Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked:

I am enquiring about the grass / hill area, which lies Behind the Community Centre on Stanton Road, which is also behind Emerson Court and runs parallel to the tracks from the Old Blue Bell pub, in Shiremoor.

I have been asking the council regarding grass cutting In This area, and I have been informed that they are not cutting the "hill area" due to the Police asking for the area not to be cut!

Would someone be able to explain why this is?

In Response:

The area described was subject to repeated incidents of arson which were reported to the police by numerous concerns from residents.  This led to a multi-agency problem solving partnership approach and it was agreed with the council that allowing the area to overgrow naturally would address the issue and also prove beneficial to local educational establishments.  The overgrowth has since led to reduction in criminal offences taking place at the location.
