Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')
As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.
Is it legal to have racing numbers on the side of your vehicle when driving on public roads outside of an official track event?
We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention.
Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Operations Department of Northumbria Police and they have supplied the following. Whilst this information is not “recorded information” about Northumbria Police, in an effort to aid and assist, we provide the below outside of the Act.
There is nothing in road traffic legislation which prevents this.
The caveat would be that the numbers do not allow the vehicle to purport to be available for another use (i.e. a taxi or similar), the signage is not offensive, not dangerous and does not cause any other breach of road traffic law (such as obscuring the vehicle registration number).
