Date Responded 12 October 2021

Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked:

Please may you provide the annual count for your Constabulary of arrests, charges, number of assailants released on bail or released without charge under Section 127 of the Communications Act 2003 from April 2010 to date.  I am only seeking data relating to online or text-based communication, specifically malicious social media communications via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp, email, and text.

I request a breakdown of the gender of the complainants in aggregated form i.e.  50 complainants are men, 76 are women.

In Response:

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted within Northumbria Police.  I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Northumbria Police.

I am able to disclose the located information to you with the below noted.

  • As per your request, we have omitted cases wherein a telephone has been used; It should be noted this offence code does not specify the type of electronic communications network, however we have achieved this due to low number of offences.  It should be noted that the method of communication is often not stated.

  • It should also be noted that someone could be arrested under a general harassment offence which was cyber-enabled which would relate to a similar area.
