Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked:

1. Please provide the number of serious road accidents (involving serious injury or fatalities) reported to your force for each of the following calendar years:

i) 2012/13

ii) 2013/14

iii) 2014/15

iv) 2015/16

v) 2016/17

vi) 2017/18 to date

 

2. Please provide the age range of the drivers (of vehicles with 4 wheels or more - so not bicycles or motorbikes) involved in these serious road accidents

Broken down by the following age ranges:

a)         17 to 25

b)         26 to 35

c)         36 to 45

d)         46 to 55

e)         56 to 65

f)          66 to 75

g)         Over 75

 

For each of the following calendar years:

i) 2012/13

ii) 2013/14

iii) 2014/15

iv) 2015/16

v) 2016/17

3. Where possible, please provide the age range of the driver found responsible for these serious road accidents

 You then emailed us and said the following ‘I’ve had a few queries for clarification on whether below request is for calendar years or financial years. I can confirm I am requesting the information for calendar years - so my requests for Qs 1 to 3 should really read i) 2012 ii) 2013 iii) 2014 iv) 2015 v) 2016 vi) 2017 and vii) 2018 to date (if possible).’

In Response:

We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for your attention.

 Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Fixed Penalty Unit Department of Northumbria Police. I can confirm that the information you have requested is held in part by Northumbria Police.

 

1.Please note that data for 2017 is currently provisional and is subject to change.  The data for 2018 is only available up to the end of January and this is also subject to change.  With this in mind, please find information below.

 Additionally in relation to your request, as most of the information you are looking for is proactively published, further similar applications will be refused under Section 21 – Information Reasonable Accessible By Other Means.  Such information can be found be researching the below website.

 The North East Regional Road Safety Resource’s website features an interactive casualty map of the North East, on which are plotted all road user casualties from the last five years. This map can be accessed through the following link :

http://www.gateshead.gov.uk/ne-roadsafety/Map.aspx and as it does not contain any data that is not already available through other sources, it has been made freely available to the public.

Full details about the map and the data used in it are given on the website, but in brief the interactive casualty map will allow you to select to display casualties by severity and road user type over a map of the North East. Furthermore, once you have displayed the desired casualties, you can click on any of the points and a brief summary of the collision, casualty and vehicle details is displayed.
