FAQ

How to report hate crime

Crimes committed against someone because of their disability, gender-identity, race, religion or belief, or sexual orientation are hate crimes and should be reported to the police.

You can get in touch with us online, by calling 101 or if you are in immediate danger, always call 999.

Safe Reporting Centres provide a supportive environment for people to report hate crime to the police. Below is a list of Safe Reporting Centres in Northumbria.

Why should I report a hate crime?

The vast majority of crimes are not reported to the police. If the police do not know about something, they cannot do anything about it and cannot keep victims safe. By reporting it to the police you may well put a stop to the behaviour and get access to support and advice.

Does hate crime legislation apply to the internet?

Yes, internet postings are subject to hate crime and there have been successful prosecutions for hate crime postings on social media such as Facebook and internet forums.

Can I report a hate crime anonymously?

Yes you can report hate crime anonymously by contacting a third party reporting centre such as Crime Stoppers. A list of helplines can be found below.

How severe does a hate crime need to be for it to be reported?

There are no minimal guidelines. If someone spits at you and calls you a derogatory name you might brush it off, however that same person could have gone on to attack someone else. By reporting your incident, the police could go on to identify the person and bring them to justice for their other attacks. Please don’t underestimate the importance of reporting a hate incident.
