Youth workers have thanked their local bobby on the beat after they donated laptops to help educate children in Newcastle.

The Foundation Futures charity work out of the Byker Wall and help run youth club projects in the local community.

They work with young people and their parents to run a number of different events for families in the area.

One of the classes they run looks to improve the literacy of young people who are struggling in school.

PCSO Nicola Turnbull, of the Newcastle East Neighbourhood Policing Team, regularly visits the project to engage with young people who attend.

And she has been so impressed by the project that she spoke to the Northumbria Police Charity Fund to get them some new kit.

On Wednesday she was joined by Neighbourhood Inspector Daniel Whyte as they visited the project to hand over two brand new laptops.

Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner Kim McGuinness was also there to hear about the work Foundation Futures do in the community.

Today Christine Henwood, who works at Foundation Futures, has thanked both the Commissioner and the officers for coming to visit.

Christine said: "Our work with people of all ages within the local community will be greatly enhanced by these laptops.

“It will enable improved access to the internet and support the development of a range of other skills"

Commissioner McGuinness said: “This was a fantastic project and I was really impressed with the passion and commitment of the youth workers I spoke to.

“They are making a real difference to the lives of young people in Byker and help steer them away from a life of crime.

“The neighbourhood officers in the area clearly value the work they do and have gone above and beyond to donate these laptops to the group.”

Insp Whyte added: “It was fantastic to meet the Police and Crime Commissioner and introduce her to the amazing people at Foundation Futures.

“We work closely with the group and they are a great way to break down barriers with members of the local community in Byker.

“Donating these laptops is the least we can do and I hope they can help have a positive impact on the lives of those involved at the project.”
