David Michael Fitzgerald found guilty of 20 sexual offences including rape.
A paedophile who subjected his victim to years of abuse has been convicted of a string of sexual offences.
David Michael Fitzgerald, 51, has today (Friday) been found guilty of 20 sexual offences including rape and sexual assault following a trial at Newcastle Crown Court.
Fitzgerald, of Cullercoats Street, Newcastle, denied the abuse which started when the victim was a child and continued into her adulthood. He has been remanded in custody and is due to be sentenced in September.
Detective Constable Hayley Evans, who led the investigation, was in court as the guilty verdicts were read out and said she was'delighted' the victim has the justice she deserves.
Det Con Evans said: "As they read the verdicts in court, I felt genuinely emotional and was just desperate to tell the victim.
"I've spoken to her and she is so pleased with the outcome. This has been such a difficult time for her and the fact she has had to endure a trial has only added to her trauma.
"Finally today, she has the justice she deserves and I was delighted to be able to tell her the good news.
"It is difficult for any victim to come forward and report any form of abuse so I hope this helps show other victims who may be out there that we will do everything we can to get justice."
