Did you know we have an expert team of cyber volunteers who use their skills to help us tackle complex investigations?
The team which is made up of recent graduates, professionals and retirees was recruited following a rigorous testing process as part of a pioneering national programme to help transform policing.
As part of National Volunteers’ Week, we are shining a light on the role they play in helping to protect the communities we serve.
Their contribution to Northumbria Police has been huge – from helping detectives tackle cybercrime, to providing support to staff in our crime department and using their skills in the field of open source research to help enhance our intelligence picture – they have certainly made their mark.
A number of our volunteers also assisted at a regional event hosted by the North East Regional Special Operations Unit (NERSOU) where they offered support to both Durham and Cleveland police.
Detective Chief Inspector Sharon Chatterton, from the Force’s Cyber Department, helped recruit and manages the team and has praised their contribution to the Force.
She said: “We are incredibly lucky to have such expertise in our Force and I’m grateful that our cyber volunteers chose to be a part of this innovative project.
“This is an exciting team to be a part of as cybercrime is constantly adapting and advancing and as a Force we need to try to make sure that we are always one step ahead – something our volunteers are helping us to achieve.
“Due to the imposed lockdown restrictions, our cyber volunteers have sadly been on pause for a while. We are busy looking at ways in which they can continue working with us during this challenging time as we’re keen to have them back as soon as it’s safe to do so.
“I want to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of our volunteers – I hope you know just how much your contribution means to us.”
As part of national Volunteers’ Week, we will be sharing more stories about the support our amazing volunteers provide to the Force and their communities.
